Still Backtesting with TradingView? Here's what you're missing...
By Dave Mabe
TradingView makes some excellent charts - I use them in some of my chart reviews.
But just because they do charting really well doesn't mean they're great at backtesting.
There are some nice things to like about it:
Extensible Pine Script language
Integration with their charts
A popular, browser-based platform
But these features alone will not get you to a robust, profitable trading strategy.
The shortcomings are substantial.
The problem is that TradingView is so popular that the traders who use it for backtesting don't realize what they're missing.
Here are the critical features of a backtester that TradingView doesn't have:
No ability to add custom columns to your backtest
No ability to backtest across all equities
No interface for Claude to run backtests and explorations
The first two are absolutely essential for creating a profitable strategy.
If your backtester can't add custom columns, you're shooting in the dark and don't realize what you're missing.
Without these features, it's just too painful to use.
When you get serious about your trading, you'll need to look elsewhere.
