Remotely Accessing Your Trading Computer

By Dave Mabe

Vacations are valuable - I've learned to take more of them over the years.

But when you trade profitable strategies, the cost of going on a vacation goes up dramatically due to opportunity costs.

I have gone through several iterations of a remote trading setup over the years, and each has serious shortcomings.

(I'm pretty sure the first remote software I used was a program called PC-Anywhere in 1997 - it was a terrible program.)

But here's the setup I've settled on and have been happy with for some time now.

I have a single trading computer at my home office. (Here are the tech specs.)

When I'm on the road, I access that same computer remotely using a laptop and trade from there.

For remote access, I use a combination of Rustdesk and Tailscale.

Tailscale is pretty great - it's basically a personal VPN and very easy to use.

Any computer that you've installed Tailscale on can be securely accessed as if you were on the same LAN.

Then I use Rustdesk to access the "remote" computer using a direct connection via Tailscale.

Both of these programs run on my iPhone, so I can easily connect to my trading computer from my phone as well.

Very convenient; it just works, and it's free.

This combo is what I recommend now, until I find something better.
