How to Filter for Earnings in Trade-Ideas

By Dave Mabe

Some strategies are specifically looking for stocks moving due to an earnings announcement.

Earnings announcements always get a lot of attention since they're so standard and routine - all types of investors and traders know what they are and react to them.

But how do you create a strategy to only trade symbols that are moving due to earnings?

Earnings are released either after the close or before the open, so if you want to filter on stocks where the current session is the first trading after earnings, you need to get creative.

Here's how you do it in Trade-Ideas.

There's an Earnings Date filter that takes a number. The number is the relative number of days to the closest earnings announcement.

This provides a nice way to filter for stocks that released earnings yesterday after the close OR today before the open.

Use -0.25 for the minimum value and 0.25 for the maximum value for the Earnings Date filter.

For some strategies, it's important to filter for the exact opposite set. That is, exclude stocks where the current session is the first one after an earnings release.

Tomorrow I'll share how to filter for that.
